Test Method Standardization A Dilemma

F. Cecil Brenner

1917 Rookwood Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910

Standardization of test methods does not always result in the ability to duplicate data in various laboratories. The author describes the efforts made to reduce variability among a group of laboratories for an apparently simple test. A considerable effort and expenditure of money did not produce the desired result. The author concluded that the variability arises from differences in operator handling of samples which are not describable or recognized. He suggests that the solution may be in establishing a training course for all technicians or by the development of standard samples and the use of correction factors for each laboratory to adjust their results to that of the industry average.
